My recent trip to the Galápagos Islands (10/10—highly recommend) unexpectedly sparked a deeper reflection on pride, belonging, and connection. Being in Ecuador, a place tied to my family roots, reminded me how powerful it is to feel genuinely proud of where you belong. It made me think about how businesses can create that same sense of connection….for their teams and for their patients or clients. Here are a few practical ideas business owners can implement right away.:
1. Share the “Why” Often
Revisit your origin story, mission, or defining moments. People don’t just buy services, they buy meaning. This can be reflected in your social media content, can most certainly be a part of your story on your website and can be reinforced with your team in team meetings.
2. Highlight Team Pride
Feature team members, celebrate wins, and call out behaviors that reflect your values. Public recognition builds collective pride. Celebrate anniversaries with small gifts and a social media shout out. Have a win jar that team members write thank you notes in for moments when teammates went above and beyond. During morning huddles, read patient reviews that showcase how amazing the team is.
3. Create Shared Language
Catchphrases, values-based language, or internal traditions help people feel “in the know” – a subtle but powerful form of belonging. Host a pot-luck lunch with your team to create a tradition of sharing, hide an object around the office (we love the office possum) for some laughs and lighter moments.
4. Invite Clients into the Story
Share patient/client success stories (with permission). Let them see themselves as part of your impact. Ask patients for online reviews. Do a monthly giveaway patients can enter by leaving a review or checking in on social media.
5. Anchor Decisions to Values
Explain why you do things the way you do – pricing, policies, care standards. Transparency builds trust and respect. Build this reminder into team meetings, have values posted in your break room and live the standards.
6. Design Moments That Matter
Small, intentional touches – personal notes, thoughtful follow-ups, meaningful onboarding – create emotional connection far beyond the transaction. Handwritten notes to new patients and to thank patients that have referred friends and family go a long way. Even sending a handwritten farewell note to patients who have chosen another provider letting them know your door is always open is a heartwarming touch.
7. Lead with Integrity (Especially When It’s Hard)
Nothing builds pride faster than knowing your leadership does the right thing, even when no one is watching. Model the integrity you expect of your team and it will be THE way to conduct business in all facets.
