Hi everyone, Jessica Martin here from Martin Management! One of my favorite things is introducing amazing professionals in the healthcare industry who can help us grow and improve. Today, I’m thrilled to share a conversation I had with MJ, a healthcare professional, coach, and advocate for individuals recovering from long COVID. Her story, expertise, and actionable advice are invaluable for anyone navigating or supporting recovery from long COVID and similar chronic illnesses.
Meet MJ: A Story of Resilience
MJ holds a master’s in public health and has a background in health policy, research, and consulting. However, her life took an unexpected turn in 2020 when she contracted COVID-19. What initially seemed like the flu developed into long COVID—a condition that left her battling debilitating symptoms for years.
From persistent fatigue and migraines to navigating medical systems with little understanding of her illness, MJ’s journey was one of perseverance and learning. Through a combination of research, integrative therapies, and neuroplasticity-based recovery programs, MJ regained her health by 2024. Now, as a coach at Vital Side, she shares her insights to support others recovering from long COVID and similar chronic illnesses.
Emotional and Psychological Challenges of Long COVID
For many, long COVID drastically alters life—impacting health, work, relationships, and financial security. As MJ explained, this can lead to anxiety, stress, and a loss of identity.
Healthcare providers can play a critical role in supporting patients emotionally. MJ emphasized the importance of:
Compassion: A simple “I’m sorry you’re going through this” can go a long way in validating a patient’s experience.
Listening: Understand that patients may have encountered disbelief or dismissal from other providers, leading to mistrust. Take the time to hear their story without judgment.
Belief: Assure patients you believe their symptoms and struggles, even when they span multiple systems or appear complex.
Communication Tips for Healthcare Providers
Providers can create a safe, trusting environment by focusing on compassionate communication:
Acknowledge the Illness: Patients feel more comfortable when providers recognize long COVID and its challenges. Sharing awareness or stories of others who’ve faced it can be reassuring.
Avoid Assumptions: Instead of guessing what a patient can or cannot do, ask thoughtful, open-ended questions.
Balance Encouragement and Realism: Support patients in working toward recovery while respecting the unpredictability and pacing required for long COVID treatment.
Practical Adjustments to Improve Care
MJ offered several practical ways healthcare environments can better accommodate patients with long COVID:
Minimize Sensory Overload: Loud music, bright lights, or crowded waiting rooms can be overwhelming. Allow patients to wear noise-canceling headphones or sunglasses, or create quieter spaces.
Streamline Appointments: Enable patients to fill out paperwork in advance and avoid long wait times. A trip to the doctor can drain significant energy.
Offer Choices: Ask if patients prefer quiet appointments or light conversation. This consideration helps them preserve their limited energy.
Be Flexible: Recognize that patients may need to reschedule or cancel due to fluctuations in their health.
Encouraging Hope
While recovery from long COVID can be slow and unpredictable, MJ stresses the importance of hope. Sharing recovery stories, like hers, and staying informed about emerging treatments can inspire patients to keep moving forward.
This conversation with MJ highlighted the importance of compassionate care and tailored support for patients with long COVID and other chronic illnesses. Healthcare providers can make a significant difference by listening, learning, and making small but impactful adjustments.
