When it comes to growing a thriving private healthcare practice or simply navigating life with less stress few tools are as unexpectedly transformative as understanding the Five Chinese Elements.
In a recent episode, I sat down with therapist-turned-elemental expert Rachelle Guzzi, founder of The Eclectic Spark, to explore how the elemental system can influence our emotions, communication patterns, nervous system regulation, and even how we design our workplaces.
This ancient wisdom system, rooted in centuries-old Chinese philosophy, offers a modern roadmap for restoring balance, within ourselves and among our teams.
What Are the Chinese Elements?
The traditional system includes five elements:
Wood
Fire
Earth
Metal
Water
According to Rachelle, these elements aren’t just abstract symbols, they’re the patterns and emotional signatures woven into the world around us. Every person carries all five elements, but each of us also has a unique “design” made up of three dominant elements:
Your personality element
Your stress element (where you go when overwhelmed)
Your challenge element (your lifelong growth edge)
These are determined by your birth information and help paint a picture of how you’re wired—and how you can better support your inner world.
Why the Elements Matter for Stress & Emotional Regulation
When life becomes overwhelming, we often ask, “Why do I feel this way?” The elements help answer that question.
Rachelle explains that each element has a signature imbalance pattern, similar to a pendulum swinging out of harmony. Recognizing these patterns allows you to take quick, tangible steps to recalibrate.
Example: The Metal Element Out of Balance
When Metal is overwhelmed, a person may feel:
Anxious
Constricted
Stuck
Hyper-focused on details or aesthetics
Simple shifts, like moving into a larger space, looking at the horizon, drinking water, or connecting with grounding images of loved ones, can restore equilibrium.
What makes this system remarkable is its practicality. Once you learn to spot your elemental patterns, you can self-regulate within minutes using easy sensory-based adjustments.
How Elemental Awareness Transforms Communication & Teamwork
One of the most surprising benefits of elemental work is how dramatically it improves workplace relationships.
Imagine:
A “Wood” team member moves fast and wants to check tasks off the list.
An “Earth” team member needs connection, warmth, and conversation before diving in.
Without understanding this, frustration builds. With understanding, collaboration strengthens.
Teams can:
Communicate with more empathy
Pair coworkers who complement each other’s strengths
Position people in roles aligned with their natural tendencies
Reduce misunderstandings that otherwise feel personal
This is especially powerful in healthcare settings, where stress runs high and emotional labor is constant.
Designing Workspaces Using the Elements
Your physical environment can regulate your nervous system just as much as your internal practices can.
At our dental practice, we infused elemental principles into the space, lighting, textures, sensory tools, visual focal points, and comfort options, to create a calming experience for both patients and staff. Rachelle noted how these touches reduce anxiety, especially for individuals with strong Metal or Water components who are sensitive to sensory overwhelm.
Even small shifts, like offering a weighted blanket, music selection, or visual distraction tools, can completely change a patient’s experience.
Using the Elements for Personal Well-Being
If you’re wondering where to start, Rachelle offers this simple first step:
Begin noticing: where do you fall out of harmony?
Ask yourself:
What situations trigger stress daily?
What patterns do I repeat?
When does my body tell me it needs something different?
Then, give yourself permission to meet that need.
We do this naturally as children (refusing scratchy clothes, wanting a certain cup, needing movement or quiet). As adults, we override those cues. The elements give us permission to listen again.
Sometimes the fix is incredibly simple:
Changing your route home
Adjusting your lighting
Wearing clothing that feels right
Taking 60 seconds to step outside
Styling your hair in a way that aligns with your energy
One of my earliest sessions with Rachelle revealed that I’m triple Fire, a fact that changed how I dress and even how I wear my hair before big days. These tiny adjustments don’t just change how I feel—they change how I show up.
Awareness is powerful. Once you see the elements in yourself and in others, you can’t unsee them. You gain language, tools, and clarity for navigating emotions, relationships, work environments, and stress in a more aligned way.
And that alignment? That’s where growth, flow, and thriving begin.
