Hi everyone, Jessica Martin here with Martin Management! Today, I’m thrilled to introduce you to John Stamper, the founder of John Stamper Media. John’s company is all about storytelling—using organic social media content and engaging video production to help clients grow. But John’s journey didn’t start there. Before becoming a media expert, he was a Submariner in the Navy and has over 20 years of experience in the dental industry. He’s hosted more than 1,500 interviews as a podcast host, organized countless virtual events, and is also a father of six. Oh, and he’s a DJ in his spare time!
Let’s dive into our conversation with John.
Life as a Submariner
I started by asking John about his time in the Navy as a Submariner—a role most people never experience. It’s definitely not for those who dislike tight spaces!
“When I finished high school, I didn’t have a clear plan, so my parents suggested I look into the Navy. After taking a test, I was told I qualified to work on a submarine. I thought, why not? It turned out to be an amazing experience. I served on two submarines, one on a six-month deployment to Europe and the other stationed in Hawaii. It was a unique chapter of my life that taught me a lot.”
Juggling Family Life with Six Kids
As a parent, I couldn’t help but ask how John balances his busy career with having six children.
“My three older boys are from a previous marriage—they’re 25, 22, and 16. Then I have three younger kids with my wife, Hillary, who are 10, 9, and our 18-month-old. It’s definitely a wide age range!” John laughed. “Parenthood teaches you something new every day, and it’s a challenge to juggle everything, but I always try to make time for my family.”
From Submarines to Dental Media
I was curious about John’s transition from the Navy to becoming a media expert in the dental world.
“After the Navy, I worked as a financial advisor before joining Brasseler, a dental company, which introduced me to the dental industry. I started selling dental handpieces and learned the ins and outs of dentistry. Over time, I became more involved with DSOs and worked closely with dentists. In 2017, I was drawn to media and podcasting, which eventually led me to launch John Stamper Media. Now, we help dental practices build brand awareness through video and social media.”
Why Social Media Matters in Dentistry
As a dental practice owner myself, I was eager to hear John’s thoughts on the importance of social media for dental practices.
“For a long time, dentistry was reactive—patients only came when they needed something. But with more practices opening, it’s crucial to stand out. Social media allows dental practices to connect with potential patients in a more personal way. It breaks down the barriers many people have about going to the dentist, helping practices showcase their personality and build trust before a patient even walks through the door.”
John stressed that social media is more than just marketing—it’s about building relationships. “Patients have so many options today. Social media gives practices the chance to highlight what makes them special and attract patients who align with their values.”
The Art of Storytelling in Marketing
John is passionate about storytelling, which he believes is the key to effective marketing.
“If you look at successful companies, the common thread is that they tell a story. Dental practices can do the same. Sharing your team’s story makes patients feel connected before they even book an appointment. Video and social media are perfect for this, and I’ve seen firsthand how they help practices grow.”
John introduced me to the “7-11-4 Rule,” a guideline for building trust online. “On average, someone needs to spend seven hours with your content, have 11 touchpoints with your brand, and see you on four different platforms before they’re ready to take action. This rule helps dental practices understand how to nurture relationships online.”
How John Stamper Media Helps Dental Practices
“I’ve recently started offering workshops for dental practices. Some clients want us to create their video content and manage their social media, while others already have teams in place. For them, I offer full-day and virtual half-day workshops to teach them how to better use social media and AI tools. My goal is to help practices connect with their communities through storytelling and build brand awareness. It’s all about growth through connection.”
